Semnan province in Iran holds great potential for tourism development given its diverse landscapes, rich cultural heritage, and strategic location along the historic Silk Road trade network. However, realizing the full potential of tourism in the region requires addressing existing barriers while capitalizing on emerging opportunities. This paper analyzes the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats associated with tourism development in Semnan, with a focus on transforming it into a smart destination through strategic planning. Semnan possesses notable strengths in its cultural heritage attractions, ranging from historic cities and archaeological ruins showcasing past civilizations to vibrant traditional handicrafts and culinary traditions. Its diverse natural landscapes spanning deserts, forests, and alpine regions in the Alborz mountains cater to nature-based and adventure tourism activities. This study examined the opportunities and challenges for developing Semnan province into a smart tourism destination in Iran. Through a SWOT analysis and review of literature, it was found that Semnan has significant strengths in its cultural heritage, natural landscapes, and strategic location along the Silk Road. However, weaknesses in infrastructure and marketing need to be addressed. Key opportunities for Semnan include leveraging its diverse attractions to appeal to cultural tourists, adventure travelers, and pilgrims. Emphasizing ecotourism, community-based tourism, and health tourism can also help unlock Semnan's untapped potential. With strategic planning and management, Semnan is well-positioned to enhance its tourism industry and establish itself as a leader in smart tourism. By capitalizing on strengths through evidence-based solutions, Semnan is positioned to thrive as a leader in smart tourism. |
